This week marks the 300th Anniversary of the Act of Union

Jo Swinson today called for a debate in Parliament on the future of the Union.

Speaking to Leader of the House of Commons Jack Straw, Jo said:

"In this week when we are celebrating the 300th anniversary of the Act of Union, will the Leader of the House find time for a debate to mark this occasion, with the opportunity to discuss not only the success of the Union so far, but also the need for further powers to be given to the Scottish Parliament and to find a solution to the English question by devolving powers in England?"

Following Mr Straw's reply, Jo commented:

"The time is right for Parliament to debate the future of the Union.

"Thankfully, most sides of the House remain in agreement over the benefits that the Union brings. A debate on the Union would give an opportunity to expose the gaping flaws in the logic of the Nationalists who seek to break it apart.

"Far from an independent Scotland having popular support, what most Scots actually want is for more powers to be given to the Scottish Parliament.

"Equally, there is an understandable feeling that England must be included in the devolution debate, by looking at possible options for devolving power south of the border."
