Pension Credit - Are you missing out?
Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit available to pensioners over 60 on low income. It guarantees everyone aged 60 and over an income of at least:
- £114.05 a week for single pensioners
- £174.05 a week if for couples
However, take-up of the benefit is low with as many as 3,000 local people missing out. Jo Swinson and the Lib Dems are campaigning for a non-means-tested state pension of £114 per week for all pensioners, rising in line with average earnings. Jo Swinson is concerned that local pensioners are missing out on money that they are entitled to.
Jo said: "It is a scandal that so many vulnerable older people are missing out on money they deserve. Many pensioners either don't know they are entitled to this money or are put off by the government's bureaucratic form filling"
"In the short term, I would encourage anyone who is unsure about their entitlement to ring the Pension Service helpline to see if they are missing out."
"In the long term, Liberal Democrats are campaigning for an end to Labour's mass means-testing by providing all pensioners with a decent Citizens Pension of £114 per week."
