SNP college cuts are unnecessary - Jo

January 9, 2012 10:07 AM

Jo Swinson MP has backed Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie's campaign to protect local college places.

As a consequence of the SNP Government's £40million college funding cuts, almost 9000 college places could be lost across Scotland, threatening the depth and quality of courses at local colleges such as Clydebank College.

The Scottish Liberal Democrats have proposed that the SNP government uses some of the £67million extra money it has recently received from Westminster to plug the college funding shortfall. You can give your support to this campaign by signing the petition at http://bit.ly/ul9UdD

Commenting, Jo said:

"Choices made by this SNP Government could mean that colleges in Glasgow could lose hundreds of places. Clydebank College, for example, will lose 214 places, while Cumbernauld College, which has a campus in Kirkintilloch, faces losing 128. This is difficult to understand when there is such a simple solution: the Scottish Liberal Democrats want to protect these college places by using the new money available to the SNP Government to invest in the vital skills and training colleges provide.

"I would urge East Dunbartonshire residents rally round and protect the quality of teaching and number of places available across Scotland by backing this important campaign."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
