Jo visits Strathlkelvin Talking Newspaper Association

June 4, 2010 11:26 AM

Jo Swinson with volunteers Stephanie McIntyre and Elspeth Cassells and recipient Margaret Hutchieson with her guide dog JackJo visited the recording studio of the Strathkelvin Talking Newspaper Association at their new premises in Kirkintilloch on Monday.

During her visit Jo met some of the volunteers who produce the free weekly audio tape of the Kirkintilloch Herald, which is distributed to seventy visually impaired people. She also met two of the recipients who receive the weekly tape, who spoke of the value the tape provides in keeping them up to date with the local news in Kirkintilloch.

The Association has over thirty volunteers, who work closely with the East Dunbartonshire Sensory Impairment Team, The Kirkintilloch Befrienders and Visibility Scotland. The volunteers highlighted the challenges in funding the Association, which relies on individuals and organisations within the area who give generous donations. However, these donations do not cover all the annual costs and the Association has to organise fundraising events throughout the year.

Commenting, Jo said:

"I am very grateful to the volunteers at Strathkelvin Talking Newspaper Association for taking the time to show me around their studio, and I hope that they are successful in finding the funding to continue the excellent work they are doing.

"The Association is providing an essential service for visually impaired people in the area, who clearly benefit a great deal from being able to listen to the Kirkintilloch Herald each week. If you know someone who would benefit from this service then I would strongly urge you to get in touch."

Chairperson Alistair Aitchison said:

"The Association was delighted that Jo Swinson was able to visit our studio and to meet some of our volunteers and recipients. Her continued support of our charity is very much appreciated."

If any reader knows of a relative, neighbour or friend who would benefit from receiving the free weekly audio tape then simply call Alistair on 0141 776 0237.

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
