Body talk at Women's Aid

Jo was recently invited to a Women's Aid refuge in East Dunbartonshire to speak about body image pressures facing women.
The charity invited Jo to speak about the Campaign for Body Confidence, which Jo launched earlier this year along with fellow Liberal Democrat MP Lynne Featherstone, who is now Minister for Equalities.
The campaign aims to challenge media images which have been shown to be damaging to women's health and well-being, leading to unhappiness, anxiety, low self esteem and even eating disorders. It seeks to ensure more honest advertising, and a greater diversity of body shapes on the catwalk and in the media. The campaign is also pressing to reduce the amount of sexualised imagery aimed at children, and for compulsory media literacy classes in schools.
Commenting, Jo said:
"It was great to meet some of the women at the refuge, and to find out about the really valuable work that Women's Aid does in supporting women who are survivors of domestic abuse.
"I was also very pleased to be invited to talk about the Campaign for Body Confidence, which is something I feel very strongly about, and with the Liberal Democrats now in Government I hope we will be able to realise some of our goals. These ideas were very well received at Women's Aid and I will be keeping them up to date with future developments as the campaign progresses."
Women's Aid is a national domestic violence charity, which provides help for women and children who have been affected and seeks to raise public awareness of domestic abuse.
The refuge is part of the Scottish Women's Aid network, which supports women, children & young people in Scotland and which runs refuges throughout Scotland. There are also Women's Aid networks in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
