School bus campaign revving up across East Dunbartonshire

April 21, 2010 2:18 PM

Save our School BusJo attended a demonstration against school bus cuts in Kirkintilloch this morning, and has expressed dismay at the Council removing a protest banner in Bearsden.

Angry parents took to the roads this morning to drive en masse from East Dunbartonshire Council HQ to Holy Family Primary School to demonstrate the increase in road traffic which will result from cuts to free school bus services. Children were wearing masks to highlight the environmental impact of the plans.

Meanwhile, East Dunbartonshire Council has removed a banner which was hung outside St. Andrew's Primary School in Bearsden, reading '3 buses or 120 cars? You decide.'

Commenting, Jo said:

"The demonstration in Kirkintilloch this morning was an excellent way to highlight the impact which the Labour-Tory Council's proposed school bus cuts will have on traffic in the area, on our environment and on children's health. Well done to Save Our Buses campaign for organising it.

"I was dismayed to hear that the Council is silencing parents in Bearsden who have been exercising their legitimate right to protest. Removing the banner outside St. Andrew's Primary was totally unnecessary and it sends the message that the Labour-Tory Council does not want to hear what parents have to say.

"Later this week Councillors will vote on a Lib Dem motion to reverse the cuts, and I would urge all Councillors to listen to what parents are telling them and vote for the motion."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
