Council rejects Tesco plans

April 14, 2010 5:17 PM

Jo Swinson outside Tesco in MilngavieJo has welcomed the Council's planning board's decision to reject Tesco's application to expand its Milngavie store.

In a meeting last night, Councillors on the planning board voted 12-5 to refuse planning permission for the expansion, after the Council's planning officials had recommended to accept the application.

All four Liberal Democrat Councillors voted to reject the plans. Although planning permission has been rejected, Tesco could now launch an appeal to the Scottish Government.

Commenting, Jo said:

"We had thought that a public hearing was the best we could hope for, so I am absolutely delighted that Councillors have voted to reject Tesco's application. My survey of Milngavie residents clearly demonstrated that there is huge opposition in the community to these plans, and Eve Gilmore and the We Like Milngavie campaign have done an excellent job of keeping local people's interests at the heart of the debate.

"The campaign may not be over as Tesco may appeal the decision, but I am ready to continue fighting to make sure the community's interests come before corporate profit when it comes to our town centre."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
