Public Hearing needed on Tesco plans

Jo has slammed the decision of planners at East Dunbartonshire Council to approve the expansion of Tesco in Milngavie.
Planning officials at East Dunbartonshire Council have recommended that the Council approval Tesco's application to expand is Milngavie store, subject to certain conditions. Jo has criticised the planners for not requiring economic or environmental impact assessments for the plans.
Councillors will discuss the matter at a planning board meeting on 13th April which members of the public will be able to attend, but there will be no opportunity for the public to air their views. It is understood that more than 730 people have raised their objections with the Council, while just 20 have spoken out in favour of the plans.
Jo is calling for a Public Hearing to give local people the opportunity to make their opinions known.
Commenting, Jo said:
"It beggars belief that planning officers have given their approval for a planning application on this scale, without requiring an assessment of the economic impact on local shops in the town centre. Despite the new store being right next to a conservation area, they have also failed to call for an environmental impact assessment.
"The report offers very little detail on how much extra traffic could be expected or how the roads would cope with it - these considerations are too important to be left up to chance.
"Councillors must call for a Public Hearing on the plans so that the more than 730 people who have contacted the Council to object to Tesco's expansion plans can have their views heard."
