Jo supports Kirky's Good Samaritans

February 12, 2010 3:22 PM

Jo Swinson and Chris Thomson of Samaritan's Purse in KirkintillichJo paid a visit to Samaritan's Purse in Kirkintilloch today to congratulate them on their emergency relief work for the people of Haiti.

Samaritan's Purse sent 400 tons of emergency relief supplies to the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince in January, including blankets, hygiene kits, shelter materials, and more than 14 tons of emergency food for 77 homes for orphaned and abandoned children. Four workers for Samaritan's Purse are currently in Haiti working in a team of 70 to help people in need.

The charity distributes humanitarian supplies to disaster-struck areas through a network of churches and Christian organisations across the world. At Christmas time, Samaritan's Purse distributes shoeboxes of gifts to under-privileged children around the globe.

Jo visited Samaritans' Purse's Scottish headquarters in Kirkintilloch to meet with Regional Manager Chris Thomson and show her support for the charity's work.

Commenting, Jo said:

"Samaritan's Purse does a brilliant job of helping people all over the world to meet their basic needs, whether they are the victims of natural disasters like the people of Haiti, suffering from HIV and AIDS or simply in need of food and water. I feel proud that such fantastic work is being done in Kirkintilloch and I'm pleased that local people have shown such generosity in this latest appeal.

"Anyone who wants to donate money to help the charity with its relief work in Haiti or elsewhere should visit www.samaritans-purse.org.uk. The charity is also looking for people willing to help store shoeboxes for needy children in the run up to Christmas, so if you have some space you would be willing to donate this Autumn, please contact chris.thomson@samaritans-purse.org.uk."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
