Jo praises local generosity to Haiti

Jo has tabled a Parliamentary motion praising the people of East Dunbartonshire on their generosity in raising money for disaster relief in Haiti.
Since a devastating earthquake struck the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on 12th January, fundraising events have been organised all over East Dunbartonshire by schools, community groups, churches and generous individuals to bring relief to those affected by the disaster.
Jo's Parliamentary motion congratulates East Dunbartonshire Council on setting up the East Dunbartonshire Haiti Appeal. It also commends many of the groups who have raised money, including Baljaffray Primary School, who held a 'Bags to School' day to raise money through recycling; The Inn in Bearsden, which held a Burns afternoon to raise funds; Joe McCrum of Milngavie, who organised a fundraising concert at Bearsden Baptist Church on Saturday; Cadder Parish Church which has held a special collection; Milton of Campsie Church which held a coffee morning to raise funds; the Pro-Life Club at St. Ninian's High School, who organised a fundraising tombola, and Scouts from 45th, 32nd and 12th Glasgow Scout Groups who have been packing bags at Sainsbury's to raise cash. The motion also pays special tribute to Sharon Reader from Milngavie, who has flown to Port-au-Prince with the Red Cross Logistics Emergency Response Unit to join the relief effort, and to Samaritan's Purse, the charity with its regional office in Kirkintilloch, which recently sent 400 tons of emergency relief supplies to Haiti.
Commenting, Jo said:
"I am impressed, though not surprised, by the generosity shown by the people of East Dunbartonshire over the past three weeks since the news of the earthquake in Haiti broke. I read about charitable events and acts of selflessness in the local papers every week, and people in East Dunbartonshire have reacted with their characteristic charitable spirit to this latest tragedy.
"For those of us living in Britain in relative comfort, it is difficult to imagine what it must be like for the people whose lives have been devastated by this earthquake, and all of our hearts go out them. It is moving to see so many different groups and individuals giving their time, effort and money to help the people of Haiti - we can all feel proud of East Dunbartonshire's response."
To make a postal donation to the relief effort make cheques payable to 'DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal' and mail to 'PO Box 999, London, EC3A 3AA.
Donations can be made at any high street bank or at a Post Office by quoting Freepay 1449.

That this House congratulates the British people for their generosity in donating more than £58 million so far to the relief effort for the people of Haiti after the devastating earthquake of 12th January 2010; welcomes the huge number of fundraising events organised by individuals, community groups, charities, schools and churches up and down the country; congratulates East Dunbartonshire Council on setting up the East Dunbartonshire Haiti Appeal; commends the extraordinary efforts of the people of East Dunbartonshire to raise money for Haiti, including Cadder Parish Church, Milton of Campsie Parish Church, the Pro-Life Club at St. Ninian's High School, Scouts from 45th Glasgow, 32nd Glasgow and 12th Glasgow Scout Groups, Baljaffray Primary School, The Inn in Bearsden and Joe McCrum; praises Samaritan's Purse in Kirkintilloch for the 400 tons of emergency relief supplies recently delivered to Port-au-Prince; pays special tribute to Sharon Reader of Milngavie, who has flown to Port-au-Prince with the Red Cross Logistics Emergency Response Unit, and the many other British people working in Haiti to bring relief to those affected by the disaster.
