Boclair pupils learn lessons of the Holocaust

Jo joined pupils from Boclair Academy this week to hear a tale of courage from a Holocaust Survivor.
Boclair Academy invited the Holocaust Educational Trust to organise a talk from Holocaust Survivor Mala Tribich, who experienced the horrors of Bergen-Belsen Nazi concerntration camp. Mala's parents and sister were shot by the Nazis, and she was separated from her brother, who was sent to another camp in Theresienstadt. After the war Mala was sent to Sweden and it was only after she received a letter from her brother Ben who was by then in England that she realised any of her close family had survived.
Jo visited Auschwitz-Birkenau in September with pupils from Boclair Academy, Douglas Academy, Lenzie Academy and Turnbull High School to see the remnants of the concentration camp first hand, which she described as a "haunting experience".
Jo also signed the Holocaust Memorial Day Book of Commitment this week, ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day on 27th January, which will mark the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Commenting, Jo said:
"I was deeply moved by Mala's story, and the courage and determination she showed in the face of such atrocities. Visiting the extermination camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau in September really brought home the terrible reality of what happened there, and the visit, as well as Mala's talk, have been truly valuable experiences for the pupils at Boclair Academy.
"Learning about what happened under the Nazis only 65 years ago is incredibly important for young people today. Sadly, we still see hatred and intolerance in our society, and educating people is crucial to ensure the world does not experience such terrible events ever again."
