Rail fare rises to hit pensioners

December 11, 2009 3:56 PM

Jo Swinson has campaigned for a fairer deal for pensionersJo has slammed proposals by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport to increase rail fares for pensioners by fifty percent.

Journeys on Scotrail services and Glasgow's Subway could cost 50% more for pensioners if plans being put to Strathclyde Concessionary Travel Scheme Joint Committee today go ahead.

Strathclyde Concessionary Travel Scheme offers cheaper fares for elderly and disabled passengers, who currently pay 40p for a single train and Subway ticket and 80p for a return. The proposals to be considered today would see an extra 20p added to the fare.

Commenting, Jo said:

"Scotrail provide an essential service to pensioners and disabled people in East Dunbartonshire and it would be very worrying to see the price of that service rise so dramatically. Public spending will have to be cut when the time is right, but Strathclyde Partnership for Transport should do all within their power to ensure this does not leave the most vulnerable sections of society worse off."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
