Buy local this Christmas, says Jo

Jo is encouraging people in East Dunbartonshire to buy food from local sources this Christmas.
Jo is supporting the National Farmers' Union Scotland in their 'What's On Your Plate?' campaign to encourage people to reduce their food miles and support Scottish farmers.
The 'What's On Your Plate?' website features a list of shops and markets selling local produce in the Forth and Clyde region, as well as traditional Scottish recipe ideas.
Jo is also supporting Kirkintilloch Farmers' Market as a source of local produce, following calls from Councillor Charles Kennedy for the market to be discontinued.
Commenting, Jo said:
"Making sure you buy your Christmas food and drink from local producers is a great way to support the local economy, as well as helping protect the environment. We have a range of butchers in East Dunbartonshire selling locally sourced food, and of course Kirkintilloch Farmers' Market, to help people reduce their 'food miles'.
"At a time when our economy is suffering, we should do all we can to support Scottish farmers to bring us fresh, healthy food and drink and to protect our countryside."
NFU Scotland President, Jim McLaren said:
"Scottish food and farming get tremendous support from the great Scottish public. More and more, Scottish consumers are looking to fill their plates with fresh, local Scottish produce and this Christmas they will, once again, have a tremendous array of home produce to choose from.
"Those who want to support Scottish farmers and food producers have a wider range of ways in which they can seek out Scottish produce than ever before. More than 80 percent of Scottish produce passes through our supermarkets and many major retailers are working more than ever with local suppliers to ensure fresh, local produce makes its way onto their shelves.
"Local butchers, grocers and dairies are also tremendous supporters of local producers. When you add in the growing number of farm shops, farmers markets and door-to-door deliveries, the opportunities for farmers to meet their customers and deliver that extra special service have never been greater."
