Jo joins debate on 'Prosperity Without Growth'

Jo joined a panel of eminent speakers in a debate held by the Sustainable Development Commission in Westminster this week.
The panel challenged the commonly held belief that high levels of economic growth are compatible with creating a low carbon, sustainable economy. The event marked the launch by the Sustainable Development Commission of the book 'Prosperity Without Growth'.
The event was chaired by Will Day, Chair of the Sustainable Development Commission. Other speakers were Tim Jackson, author of 'Prosperity Without Growth' and Professor of Sustainable Development at the University of Surrey; Lord Anthony Giddens, Professor Emeritus at the London School of Economics and author of 'Politics of Climate Change'; and Ed Crooks, Energy Editor for the Financial Times.
Jo has led calls in Parliament for prosperity to be measured not just in terms of economic growth but also in terms of levels of wellbeing, and pursues this agenda as Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Wellbeing Economics.
Commenting, Jo said:
"I was honoured to be invited to join the panel for this debate on what is an extremely important topic. The current economic crisis offers us an opportunity to address the issues of economic and environmental sustainability, and we must ask ourselves how much accumulating monetary wealth is adding to our wellbeing.
"In this era of climate change and increasing global inequality we must recognise that we live in a world constrained by ecological limits, and question whether aiming for high levels of economic growth is the best way to deliver prosperity."
