Jo delighted for Liberal Democrat Euro candidate

June 8, 2009 6:00 PM

Jo Swinson MP today praised Liberal Democrat MEP George Lyon for his victory in the European elections

George is a former Minister in the Scottish Parliament and was head of the Scottish National Union of Farmers. He aims to give Scotland a stronger voice in Europe in order to bring jobs and investment to the country.

George replaces Elspeth Attwooll as the Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland. Elspeth was first elected to the European Parliament in 1999 and has worked extremely hard over the past 10 years to effectively represent Scottish people in Europe.

Commenting, Jo Swinson said:

"I am delighted that the Scottish Liberal Democrats have successfully held this European seat and want to congratulate both George and the Liberal Democrat team for an impressive campaign. His predecessor Elspeth has done a fantastic job over the past decade and I am sure George will continue to be a strong voice in Brussels, which is crucial to ensure that the interests of the Scottish people are taken into account"

"The results show that the Liberal Democrats remain a powerful influence in Scotland. Despite the SNP boasting that they would win 3 seats they failed to do so, the Conservatives lost a seat and the Labour vote collapsed. The Liberal Democrats are up for the challenge of gaining seats in Scotland from Labour whenever a General Election is called"

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
