Allander reprieve welcome but more is at stake over Kilmardinny

May 29, 2009 2:00 PM

Jo has welcomed East Dunbartonshire Council's pledge not to close Allander Leisure during redevelopment at Kilmardinny, but said there are other issues with the project which must be addressed.

The announcement made this week by Councillor Simon Hutchison that Allander Leisure centre will not be closed comes as good news to many in Milngavie and Bearsden who had feared being left with no sports facilities while redevelopment was underway.

The Council must now reach an agreement with developers CALA Management and Stewart Milne Holdings by 6th July on how to proceed with the development, or else the government reporter who approved the controversial Lower Kilmardinny Project will make a decision on their behalf.

Commenting, Jo said:

"The Council are clearly making the right decision in promising to keep Allander Leisure open while the redevelopment is underway.

"However, the sports centre is not the only issue at stake here, and it is very important that the Council takes a robust stance in its negotiations with the developers to address the problems their plans would cause to traffic, parking and local schools to name a few.

"The most important thing is that it should be the needs of local people, and not the developers, which are the deciding factor, and I am seeking an urgent meeting with the Council to discuss the matter."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
