Jo asks Minister to give Cycle Train the green light

May 18, 2009 5:00 PM

In a meeting with Transport Minister Paul Clark today, Jo urged him to change the law to allow St. Matthew's Primary School's Cycle Train to be resumed.

The School Cycle Train, which allows pupils to cycle to school in a group supervised by experienced cyclists, has been suspended due to police concerns that it is illegal to cycle on the pavements. However, some children who have not yet taken their cycling proficiency tests are not yet experienced enough to cycle on the roads. After raising the matter in the House of Commons earlier this year, Jo set up a meeting with the Transport Minister to ask for the law to be changed to accommodate initiatives such as the Cycle Train.

Commenting, Jo said:

"It is a great shame that the Cycle Train is no longer running, as it's a really good way for the children to get exercise and it reduces the number of cars on the road during the school run. The Minister told me that the government does not intend to change the law, but I am determined to take this forward and I have contacted the Scottish Government to ask them to look into it. I very much hope this can be resolved so that the Cycle Train at St. Matthew's can start up again."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
