Jo invites veterans to claim badges

April 27, 2009 10:30 AM

In celebration of the first Armed Forces Day, Jo is calling on local ex-servicemen and women to come forward to claim their Veterans Badges.

The first Armed Forces Day will take place on Saturday 27th June, replacing celebrations which for the last three years have taken place on Veterans Day. This will be the third time Jo has honoured ex-servicemen and women in East Dunbartonshire by presenting them with badges at a commemoration ceremony.

Jo has presented 100 badges, but according to figures from the Ministry of Defence, there could be 7,000 veterans in East Dunbartonshire who have not yet claimed their Veterans Badge. Jo is taking this opportunity to invite all veterans who have not claimed their badge to come forward.

Commenting, Jo said:

"It is entirely appropriate that we hold an Armed Forces Day to express our gratitude to our ex-servicemen and women for their service to our country.

"The day is also a good opportunity for all those who have not yet claimed their Veterans Badge to do so.

"I have already helped 100 local Armed Forces veterans to apply for their Veterans Badges, and will be delighted to help others who have not yet applied. Anyone with enquiries about the unclaimed badges should contact my office in writing or by phone on 0141 762 2209."

Enquiries in writing to Jo Swinson's office should be made to: 4 Springfield House, Emerson Road, Bishopbriggs, G64 1QE.

Men and Women who enlisted in HM Armed Forces between 3 September 1945 and 31 December 1994 are entitled to a Veterans Badge. This includes members of the Cyprus Regiment, Home Guard and Polish Forces under UK Command and there is no qualifying length of Service.

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
