Swinson: Allander Sports Centre must stay open until new facility is built

April 16, 2009 5:59 PM

Jo has condemned as "outrageous" the Scottish Government Reporter's decision to approve the Lower Kilmardinny Project.

The proposals by CALA Management and Stewart Milne Holdings, which were rejected by East Dunbartonshire councillors in 2007, would see up to 550 new homes built on the land from Hillfoot in Bearsden to Auchenhowie in Milngavie. The development would also include offices, a retail development, space for a park and ride, a new leisure centre and other facilities.

Local residents have voiced strong opposition to the plans, citing the temporary closure of the sports centre, congestion on the roads and the capacity of local schools as concerns.

Commenting, Jo said:

"There was a long list of very good reasons why the Council rejected these proposals, and I was dismayed to learn that the Scottish Government Reporter has given them the go ahead. It is all very well saying that a new sports facility will be built, but 18 months or possibly more is an unacceptable length of time for the people of Milngavie and Bearsden to go without a sports centre. The Council owns the Allander Sports Centre, and they must do everything within their power to ensure that it is not closed until a better facility is available in the vicinity. I am also concerned that the £10million the developers are offering to invest in this is insufficient to replace the facilities we have now, let alone improve on them."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
