Parliament still a boys' club - Swinson

April 3, 2009 6:33 PM

Jo will give the Elizabeth Wallace Memorial Lecture at Glasgow University, entitled 'Experiences of a Female MP: Overcoming the Ultimate Old Boys Club'.

The lecture is hosted by the Glasgow Association of University Women, a society which was founded at a time when few women were attending university, let alone becoming Members of Parliament. It will take place at 6pm on Wednesday 8th April in the Boyd Orr Lecture Theatre 2, and is free for members of the public to attend.

Commenting, Jo said:

"Women have come a long way over the past century, and I believe it is important both to reflect on our achievements thus far, and to look to the future and the battles we have not yet won. I am honoured to have been invited to give the Elizabeth Wallace Lecture and I hope it will provide some insight into what it's like to be a young woman in a public institution which is still very much male-dominated. I believe it is vital that we encourage more women to stand for election, so that the gender balance in Parliament more accurately reflects the country as a whole."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
