Sports hall demolition would be a ridiculous waste

Jo Swinson has strongly criticised the company responsible for the redevelopment of Bishopbriggs town centre, who this week have revealed they propose to remove the sports hall, despite overwhelming local support for keeping it.

In a survey of Bishopbriggs residents released by Jo in 2008, 93% of respondents said they would like to retain the existing sports hall in the town centre for community use. In January 2008 Jo met with Muse Developments, the company behind the Bishopbriggs town centre redevelopment, to present the survey results and urge them to incorporate the sports hall in their plans. However a letter from Muse to Jo this week contains the news that they are now proposing to dismantle the building, saying "We have not managed to find a viable use for the sports hall."

Commenting on this news Jo said:

"Local people showed overwhelming support for keeping the sports hall in Bishopbriggs town centre when I asked them about it. The sports hall was built just a few years ago at a cost of almost £1million; it would be a ridiculous waste to knock it down. The community would certainly like to use such a modern, multi-purpose facility right in the centre of Bishopbriggs, and local groups have already looked into how it could be run by volunteers for community benefit. For Muse to say they can't find a viable use for it shows either an amazing lack of creativity or total disregard for the views of local people. I encourage residents to attend the exhibition next weekend to make their views known in no uncertain terms. Muse must go back to the drawing board and put the sports hall back in their plans."

Members of the public will be invited to an exhibition at Bishopbriggs Library on 6th from 10am-2pm and 7th March from 10am-1pm to offer their feedback on this and other proposals for the development of the town centre.
