Jo Swinson has urged her East Dunbartonshire constituents to make a green pledge to recycle their Christmas cards this year.

The Woodland Trust is encouraging everyone to recycle their Christmas cards. This year, 73.6 million cards were recycled to enable the charity to plant more trees. If everyone recycles just one card, the Woodland Trust will be able to plant 15,000 trees which would create a wood the size of 30 football pitches.

Special recycling bins at WHSmith, Tesco, TK Maxx, and Marks and Spencer will be available from 2nd - 31st January 2009. Alternatively, you can drop your Christmas cards into Jo's office at 4 Springfield House, Emerson Road, Bishopbriggs.

Jo Swinson, who is backing the scheme, said:

"People across Scotland will send over one hundred million cards this Christmas but amazingly one in five of us still throw our cards in the bin.

"It is important to recycle as many cards as possible to raise funds to help the Woodland Trust plant more trees, and help reduce the volume of waste going to landfill sites.

"I will be taking all my Christmas cards to be recycled this year and will be keeping a recycling bin at my constituency office in Bishopbriggs for anyone who wants to drop their cards there. I want everyone to make a green New Year's resolution and recycle all their cards."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
