New Year's resolution needed from Council on Precinct and West Highland Way

Jo has slammed the Council for delays affecting users of the West Highland Way and Milngavie Precinct
East Dunbartonshire Council must resolve to improve its approach to Milngavie Precinct and the start of the West Highland Way in 2009, Jo Swinson has warned.
Jo has slammed the Council for the catalogue of delays and problems that have affected both walkers and shoppers using the precinct this year.
The most recent issue to spark local anger is the Council's refusal to reinstate benches that were removed during upgrade work on the precinct. Jo has written to East Dunbartonshire's Environment Corporate Director Gerry Cornes to urge that the benches be placed back in their previous location.
She has also criticised the delays that affected West Highland Way information board and archway that were erected earlier this year.
Commenting, Jo Swinson said:
"Milngavie Precinct is not only the hub of the town, it marks the start of the West Highland Way, one of the most popular long distance walks in the world. It should be one of East Dunbartonshire's strongest assets, but instead this year has seen delays over signage for the start of the West Highland Way and now the latest fiasco around the benches that have been removed from the precinct.
"At the start of the year I raised the issue of the West Highland Way information board and urged the Council to put it back up for the benefit of ramblers and visitors. It was only after a delay of 5 months that the information board was finally reinstated.
"Similarly, the archway marking the start of the West Highland Way was subject to excessive delays. The site was an eyesore for much of the year, with pedestrian access to the precinct restricted. There was little indication for visitors that they had reached one of Scotland's top walking destinations.
"Now shoppers and others who use Milngavie Precinct have been angered by the fact that the benches donated by M&S have not been put back in their place after being removed for Council works to take place.
"The overall impression is that Milngavie Precinct and the start of the West Highland Way have been at the bottom of the East Dunbartonshire Council's to do list during the past year. I would suggest that the Council makes a New Year's Resolution to improve its approach in 2009. Nobody wants to see a repeat of the delays and inconvenience to walkers, shoppers and visitors that 2008 will be remembered for."
