Further Government commitments needed on Post Office

Jo urged the Minister to give further support to Post Offices

Jo Swinson has pressed Ministers at Westminster to commit to delivering more Government services through the Post Office.

Jo described the Government's decision to renew the Post Office Card Account contract as "belated, but very welcome", but urged the Government to do more to guarantee a secure future for the Post Office network.

Speaking in the House of Commons today, Jo asked Scotland Office Minister Ann McKechin:

"What other plans do the Government have to build on their belated, but very welcome, decision to save the Post Office card account, in order to deliver many more Government services through the post office network and to give the remaining post offices a much more secure future?"

Commenting later, she said:

"Last month's decision to spare the Post Office Card Account from the axe was an important victory for Post Office campaigners, but it is only a small part of the business that the Government could be sending the Post Office's way.

"This Government has been responsible for stripping business away from the Post Office. Customers used to be able to buy their TV licence at the Post Office - not any more. When I surveyed sub-Postmasters across East Dunbartonshire, they repeatedly said that the withdrawal of Government business had had a damaging effect on their business.

"The Minister indicated that Royal Mail is considering introducing a number of innovative products that would be delivered through the Post Office, but did not say anything that pointed to the serious change of direction that is needed from the Government."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
