POCA decision an overdue victory for common sense

The POCA announcement ends a prolonged period of uncertainty for sub-postmasters

The Government's long awaited announcement on the Post Office Card Account ends a costly and calamitous period of uncertainty for local sub-Postmasters, Jo Swinson has said.

Secretary of State for Work and Pensions James Purnell announced at Westminster today that the Government has cancelled its unfinished tendering process for the new Post Office Card Account (POCA) contract and will award the new POCA contract to Post Office Ltd. The contract will be based on the existing terms of the POCA agreement and will run until March 2015, with the possibility of a further extension beyond that.

Commenting on the announcement, Jo said:

"Today's announcement is a huge victory for campaigners and supporters of the Post Office. The Government has realised that it cannot continue to undermine the Post Office network in the face of such vociferous opposition to their plans.

"The fact remains that this decision is long overdue. It has been utterly obvious for months that the nationwide reach of the Post Office network makes it the best provider of the POCA. The Government has wasted money on a cancelled tendering process and put sub-Postmasters through an unnecessary period of uncertainty.

"This is an overdue victory for common sense, and a day on which Government Ministers have been humbled by supporters of the Post Office."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
