Jo praises Bishopbriggs Academy's Arctic explorer

Jo Swinson has congratulated Bishopbriggs Academy pupil David Smith, who recently returned from an expedition across the Arctic seas to investigate the effects of climate change.
The Cape Farewell Youth Expedition saw David make the journey from Iceland to Baffin Island, Canada via Greenland as part of an international team of students.
Jo said:
"Many congratulations to David for taking part in this intrepid journey. David gave a fascinating account of his expedition across the Arctic seas and has obviously benefited greatly from the experience. Having examined first-hand the effects of our changing climate on the Arctic environment, David is now well-equipped to advocate the importance of tackling climate change to his fellow students.
"An expedition of this size does not take place without a serious amount of planning and groundwork. I was grateful to hear from the pupils who were the ground crew supporting the expedition from Bishopbriggs, and pay tribute to them for the part they played in creating this fantastic experience."
During the visit to Bishopbriggs Academy this morning, Jo also gave a presentation on climate change to an assembly of S5 and 6 pupils. Commenting afterwards, she said:
"The current generation of young people are expected to face a significant impact from the effects of climate change in their lifetime. Teaching young people early on about the causes and effects of climate change is the best way to equip them to tackle the issue."
Elspeth Attwooll, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland, added:
"I'd also like to congratulate David on his amazing journey, from which I think we can all learn important lessons. He had to work closely with people from all over the world to reach a common goal, and overcome many different challenges along the way.
"We can all learn from this. Every country is in the same boat when it comes to climate change and we each have a part to play."
