Barack Obama won a convincing victory over Republican opponent John McCain
Jo Swinson has congratulated Barack Obama on his election as President of the United States. Commenting, she said:
"After the dismal years of the Bush administration, I am hugely encouraged by Barack Obama's election as the next US President. This pivotal moment in America's political history is a moment of change that will resonate across the world.
"With the election of the country's first black President, Americans have reminded us of their capacity for showing leadership and enlightenment in the world, which has been absent for the past eight years.
"The daunting global challenges facing Obama, on the world economy, climate change and conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, are shared by us in this country. It is essential that the UK works closely with Barack Obama to make progress against these goals."
