Jo sets reading challenge at Bishopbriggs library

This year's Summer Reading Challenge has a sporting theme, and encourages children to read six books during the summer break
Jo Swinson has promoted the Summer Reading Challenge to children in East Dunbartonshire, by presenting a pack of books to Bishopbriggs library today.
Launched last month, the Summer Reading Challenge sets children the task of reading six books through their local library this summer. As part of the Summer Reading Challenge, children are given a special pack and a set of incentives to collect as they read, with a certificate or medal for those that successfully complete the Challenge, which has a different theme each year.
Jo said:
"The Summer Reading Challenge should keep children in East Dunbartonshire active and interested throughout the long summer holidays, and help develop a positive attitude towards reading that they will take with them into adult life."
Children and Young People's Services coordinator Linda Owen added:
"Bishopbriggs library is delighted to accept these books from Jo Swinson MP, which are a helpful reminder to children in Bishopbriggs of what their local library has to offer. Through the Summer Reading Challenge, we hope that local children and young people will develop a taste for reading that will keep them coming back for more."
The Summer Reading Challenge is 10 years old this year. It is created and run by The Reading Agency, the independent charity working to get people reading more, in partnership with the UK library network and supported by children's book publishers. This year's Challenge has a sporting theme and is called Team Read, with a programme of activities, incentives and an interactive website.
Research shows how central reading for pleasure is for children's life chances, and the Summer Reading Challenge is shown to improve children's reading range, confidence and enjoyment. Schools say that this contributes to their overall confidence and reading achievement, with potentially life-changing results.
