Humiliated: The Glasgow East poll is a crushing blow for Gordon Brown

Jo Swinson has congratulated Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate Ian Robertson for running a positive local campaign in the Glasgow East by-election.

Jo also signalled that the by-election result is a clear vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister and the Labour party.

Commenting on the by-election result, she said:

"Ian Robertson is a strong candidate who fought a positive campaign in Glasgow East, focusing on local issues like the fight to save Parkhead fire station. The Liberal Democrats will continue to stand up for local issues long after the election furore has died down.

"This by-election result is a humiliating vote of no confidence in Gordon Brown and the Labour Government at Westminster. They have been beaten in their heartland of Glasgow East and Gordon Brown now has a long summer ahead of him as he contemplates the full implications of this crushing defeat."
