Exciting times as Antonine Wall decision nears

A decision on the Antonine Wall's bid for World Heritage Site status is expected in early July
With a decision expected early next month on the Antonine Wall's bid for World Heritage Status, Jo Swinson is seeking to maximise the opportunities that a successful outcome will bring.
The World Heritage Committee meets in Quebec, Canada, from 2nd to 10th July. The final decision on the World Heritage Site award will be announced towards the end of this nine-day conference.
Speaking in the House of Commons today, Jo asked Secretary of State for Scotland Des Browne MP:
"I very much welcome the Secretary of State's comments. I am sure we all wish the Antonine wall bid team well and congratulate all those involved in preparing the bid, including those in East Dunbartonshire, which also contains a section of the wall.
If, as we hope, the Antonine wall secures world heritage status next month, will he facilitate discussions between the Scottish Government and those involved in the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth games project to ensure that that opportunity is taken to promote this fascinating piece of Roman heritage in the cultural activities surrounding the games? That would also help to bring the wall to an international audience."
Commenting later, Jo said:
"With the Antonine Wall World Heritage Bid announcement just a few weeks away, this is a very exciting time. A successful outcome will mean the spotlight falling on East Dunbartonshire and a chance to exhibit the very best that the area has to offer.
"The 2014 Commonwealth Games will present a unique opportunity to showcase Glasgow and the region to a global audience. As well as the sporting events being prepared, a cultural programme must be mapped out, to ensure that visitors see not only the attractions Glasgow has to offer, but also the best of East Dunbartonshire and other surrounding areas. A World Heritage Site-accredited Antonine Wall would be one of the jewels in the West of Scotland's cultural crown."
