MPs commit to get fit

The programme will feed into a review of the Government's physical activity strategy

Jo Swinson has joined with other leading female MPs to take part in a new fitness scheme designed to demonstrate how busy women can fit regular exercise into their crowded lifestyles.

Along with Tessa Jowell, Meg Munn, Barbara Keeley and seven other MPs and MSPs, Jo will take part in the three month fitness and exercise mentoring programme being run by the Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF).

Jo said:

"As with many women my work schedule is hectic and getting regular exercise can be a challenge. By taking part in the WSFF programme I hope to raise awareness of the ways in which regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle can be compatible with a busy working life.

"With London 2012 and Glasgow 2014 on the horizon, now is the perfect time to encourage women to enjoy the benefits of a healthier lifestyle."

Sue Tibballs, Chief Executive of WSFF, said:

"It is worrying how few women are doing enough exercise to benefit their health. Physical activity is not only beneficial to physical health, but also to mental health. Women who make activity integral to their lives report higher levels of confidence and self-esteem.

"We hope that this project will highlight these issues and encourage other busy women to make positive changes to their lifestyles."

The programme is being launched as a result of findings from the It's time report which found 81% of women aren't doing enough sport or exercise to benefit their health. A key barrier to this is increasingly busy lifestyles with competing demands.

The MPs will have a tailored exercise plan and one-to-one fitness sessions twice a week at their local gyms. WSFF will also support them to take up any additional sports or activities. Throughout the project the MPs will feedback their experiences, both positive and negative, to help deepen the understanding of the issue at a time when the government is conducting a review of its physical activity strategy.

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
