Jo positive on farmers' market

Jo pushed for the market to re-open last year

Jo Swinson is upbeat about the future of Kirkintilloch Farmers' Market, after she visited the market today to listen to the issues faced by stallholders.

The farmers' market stopped running in 2007 but, having restarted last October, is now into its seventh month of operating.

Jo said:

"Since the farmers' market restarted in Kirkintilloch last year, it has steadily managed to establish itself in the town and is now increasingly popular. While the weather has not helped in recent months, the stallholders I spoke to are talking positively about the future of the market.

"There is no doubt that the quality of the fresh local produce on offer helps greatly in attracting shoppers to the market. What is needed most now is support and publicity, to build on the market's popularity and ensure it has a strong future in Kirkintilloch.

"According to managers at the Regent Centre, which has been particularly supportive of the market, footfall in the centre increases by 1,500 on market days. This shows the potential for other traders in Kirkintilloch to benefit from having the market in the town. It is important that shoppers at the market are encouraged to see what else Kirkintilloch has to offer."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
