Jo calls for local views on e-petitions

The proposed system will allow online petitions
Jo Swinson is encouraging her East Dunbartonshire constituents to take part in a new Parliamentary consultation on e-petitions.
Written petitions have long been used at Westminster, and now the House of Commons Procedure Committee has launched an inquiry into the introduction of e-petitions. The consultation aims to gather the views of the public on whether people would use an e-petitioning system and what they would expect from it.
The web address for the consultation site is: forums.parliament.uk/e-petitions, and the forum will run until Friday 18 February 2008.
Jo Swinson said:
"Petitions have been used for centuries by members of the public to raise grievances with Monarchs and later with Parliament. I support the introduction of e-petitions, which are a sensible extension of existing Parliamentary procedure.
"When it comes to playing a part in our democracy through the petitions system, it is important that people are given every means possible of participating.
"The consultation that has been announced by the Procedure Committee will allow people to voice their opinions on the e-petitions proposal. Whether people are for or against the new scheme, I would encourage them to take part in the consultation to make their views known."
The Committee is aiming to publish its report on e-petitions before Easter, after which the Government will respond to the recommendations made. Further information about the Procedure Committee can be found on the Committee's homepage: www.parliament.uk/parliamentary/proccom.
