Jo hopes other congretations will follow Cadder's example

Jo Swinson was on hand today to hear about one Bishopbriggs church congregation's efforts to achieve an 'Eco-Congregation' award.

The members of Cadder Parish Church are hoping to secure the award, endorsed by Action of Churches Together in Scotland and delivered by a partnership between Keep Scotland Beautiful and the Society, Religion and Technology Project.

As well as encouraging action such as recycling and saving energy at home, the Church's members run a non-profit Fairtrade coffee shop. Revenues go to a combination of local, national and international projects and the group raised nearly £7,000 in 2006.

Commenting after meeting the group today, Jo said:

"The Cadder Parish congregation members are setting a great example with their attempt to achieve an Eco-Congregation award. Their approach involves green action both at home and in the community.

"Often people want to be green but find it hard to know where to start. The group has provided helpful information locally on simple steps to take, such as using energy-saving lightbulbs and using public transport instead of driving.

"It is very encouraging to see the climate change message prompting action in the local Bishopbriggs community. I hope Cadder Parish Church's work towards achieving an Eco-Congregation award will lead to other local churches following suit."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
