Jo voices fears after Kirkintilloch Farmers' Market fails to go ahead

Kirkintilloch could potentially host a thriving farmers' market

Jo Swinson has urged East Dunbartonshire Council to act to prevent the disappearance of Kirkintilloch Farmers' Market.

The market, normally held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, failed to go ahead today. Jo has been campaigning to save local farmers' markets after East Dunbartonshire Town Centre Management Ltd, which gave financial backing to the markets, ceased trading recently.

Jo said:

"Kirkintilloch Farmers' Market would ordinarily have been held today, but worryingly, it was not able to go ahead. My real concern is now to ensure we have not seen the last farmers' market in Kirkintilloch.

"With the right location and promotion, a farmers' market could be a great success in the town. However, I am not convinced that East Dunbartonshire Council are doing all they can to safeguard the market's future.

"Having written to the council to ask what they were doing to protect our local farmers' markets, I was astonished that the response I received did not even mention Kirkintilloch Farmers' Market. With a solution of sorts having been found to the difficulties threatening the market in Milngavie, it appears Kirkintilloch has been forgotten.

"The council must act now to ensure that this is not the end for Kirkintilloch Farmers' Market."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
