There has been a huge rise in farmers' markets and other specialist markets in recent years

Jo Swinson is supporting the future of East Dunbartonshire farmers' markets by teaming up with football legend Gary Lineker.

Gary, the son of a market trader, and Jo are both backing National Markets Week, which will kick off on Monday June 18th. Jo will attend the All Party Parliamentary Markets Group meeting on the 18th to mark the start of Markets Week.

Jo said:

"National Markets Week is a good opportunity to show support for the future of our local farmers' markets in East Dunbartonshire.

"Local farmers' markets in my constituency have come under threat, and it is in the interest of local communities that these important local events are not lost.

"My campaign to save East Dunbartonshire Farmers' Markets is calling for East Dunbartonshire Council to do what it can to safeguard the future of our local farmers' markets."

The Week, organised by the All Party Group on the Markets Industry, is designed to highlight the importance of markets in strengthening communities and providing healthy food at cheap prices.

Gary Lineker, the former England captain, who used to help his dad out on Leicester market, said:

"Market traders are some of the most hard working men and women in the country. Many people depend on markets for their livelihoods. I am very pleased to support the markets industry and would like to see more young people entering the trade.

"Some people are so used to driving to supermarkets that they do not realise what a wonderful asset they have on their doorsteps - in the heart of their community - to get their five portions of fruit and vegetables a day."

"They are great public spaces for people to meet for a chat and to catch up."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
