Jo Swinson has welcomed the first annual British Tourism Week with a show of support for the West Highland Way.

The inaugural British Tourism Week runs from 12-18 March 2007 and is being held alongside the second Scottish Tourism Week, following a successful event in 2006. The week will consist of a series of events around the country highlighting the importance of Britain's £74 billion visitor economy.

Commenting on Tourism Week, Jo said:

"With VisitScotland having run its first Tourism Week last year, it is pleasing to see VisitBritain adopting the successful Scottish approach to promoting the country's tourist industry through a week of events, publicity, workshops, exhibitions and more.

"The UK tourism industry is worth £7.4 billion, employing 2.1 million people - more than either the transport or construction sectors. Scotland has a particular attraction to tourists, many of whom come for the magnificent scenery and walking country.

"One of East Dunbartonshire's prime attractions is the start of the West Highland Way in Milngavie, and completing the whole route is a challenge that attracts keen walkers from around the world. As well as promoting the fact that Scotland's premier long distance route has its origin in Milngavie, we need to make sure all those who attempt it know they will get a warm welcome in East Dunbartonshire."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
