Jo and Cathy get Really Resourceful

Really Resourceful puts emphasis on 'reusing' rather than recycling

Jo joined Cathy McInnes, Liberal Democrat Scottish Parliamentary Candidate, today, to support a local voluntary group's call for help from East Dunbartonshire businesses.

The pair visited Really Resourceful, the Bearsden-based group specialising in the re-use of business paper, card and fabrics, along with MEP for Scotland Elspeth Attwooll

Really Resourceful relies on donations from businesses for its Community Resource Centre. This provides reusable items for local community groups to use in their art and craft projects. Committee chair Shiela Gillan is seeking to raise the profile of Really Resourceful through a series of reuse craft workshops, aimed at raising awareness of reusing with both local businesses and the community.

Speaking ahead of the visit, Cathy McInnes said:

"Really Resourceful carries out an imaginative form of recycling. The group's work is a great way to make children and others more aware of the need to recycle and re-use waste products.

"It is essential that local businesses are aware of Really Resourceful, as the group relies on donations of unwanted materials to carry on its work.

"I firmly believe in putting environmental schemes like this at the heart of communities. Liberal Democrats have a green thread running through all our policies, and we have set ambitious targets such as generating 100% of Scotland's electricity from renewable sources by 2050.

"No other party is in a better position to safeguard Scotland's precious natural environment for future generations."

Shiela Gillan, Chair of Really Resourceful, commented:

"Today's workshop will help to raise awareness of reusing within the wider community. We would encourage local businesses to donate offcuts and remnants to support our work. If any one can also help us with storage we would be grateful as we hope to increase the range of materials we divert from landfill."

Jo added:

"As Really Resourceful demonstrates, there are many novel ways to be more environmentally friendly. Climate change is an issue facing all of us, and a challenge we all must meet by adopting greener behaviour - recycling more, flying less, and in other, unusual ways exemplified by Really Resourceful."

Really Resourceful is a not-for-profit venture that has been established for over a year.

It is a community resource centre, running workshops as special project to raise awareness. Workshops are offered to staff and volunteers in community groups, and children are welcome to attend with parents. The crafts are suitable for all ages and abilities.

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
