Jo takes sign language concerns to Minister

Jo Swinson has taken the concerns of one of her constituents over changes in the Access to Work scheme affecting deaf people directly to a UK Government Minister.

Jo met today with Minister for Disabled People, Anne McGuire MP. Speaking after the meeting, she said:

"Access to Work is supposed to help employers integrate disabled people into the workforce, but in East Dunbartonshire, concerns have been raised with me over a reduction in the provision of sign language interpreters.

"This issue is mirrored by a national campaign by the Access to Work Users Group, highlighting the problems being posed for deaf and hard of hearing people by changes to the scheme.

"Today's meeting with the Minster was very positive and I am the whole optimistic that the views of Access to Work users are now being listened to.

"It is essential that not only deaf and hard of hearing people, but all people with disabilities, are given the means necessary for them to make a valuable contribution in the workplace."
