Jo calls for more Fairtrade in Parliament

Jo led an East Dunbartonshire fair trade delegation to Parliament recently to meet Minister for International Development Gareth Thomas

Jo Swinson MP has asked the House of Commons Commission to set an example by providing goods sourced from Fairtrade suppliers in House of Commons gift shops.

The question was put earlier this week to House of Commons Commission spokesman Nick Harvey MP.

Jo commented:

"I saw huge enthusiasm surround Fairtrade Fortnight in East Dunbartonshire, as, I am sure, did my colleagues in their own constituencies around the country. To make a real difference, Fairtrade is a habit that needs to be sustained all year round.

"Although 95% of souvenirs sold in Parliament are from British suppliers, Parliament has an opportunity to set an example by asking these suppliers to source raw materials that are fairly traded. I have asked the House of Commons Commission to look into this matter and report back to me."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.

    • If you agree, Jo Swinson, the Liberal Democrats, and their elected representatives may use the information you provide to contact you about issues you may find of interest. Some of the contacts may be automated. You can opt out of these contacts at any time by contacting us.
