Jo gains Minister's commitment over abuse refuge TV licence concessions

March 11, 2006 5:39 PM

Jo Swinson MP has secured a commitment from Women and Equality Minister Meg Munn over TV licence concessions for women's domestic abuse refuges.

Speaking in a Westminster Hall debate on Violence against Women yesterday, Jo made the case for granting TV licence fee concessions to women's refuges. Concessions are currently enjoyed by hotels and guest houses, as well as other services, such as residential care homes.

Speaking after the debate, Jo commented:

"Having launched a campaign on International Women's Day (Wednesday 8th March) to gain concessions for women's refuges on TV licence fees, this debate was a very timely opportunity to put pressure directly on the Minister.

"The current situation is unfair and makes victims of not only extremely vulnerable women, but also the volunteer services that are set up to help them.

"I was very pleased to hear the Minister give the commitment that she will ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to look at putting this concession in place.

"I see no excuse for Ministers not to act to rectify this anomalous and, for some, traumatic situation."

Jo Swinson's campaign aims to press the Government to include refuges which house women who have fled domestic abuse as a concessionary group in the current TV licence scheme.
