Jo rewards initiative at local manufacturer

Jo joined workers and company directors at the annual award ceremony
Kirkintilloch company Guala Closures UK Ltd (Montgomery) has marked its annual staff awards ceremony with a visit from local MP Jo Swinson.
Jo presented prizes to staff as part of the company's Continuous Improvement initiative. First Prize of a holiday voucher worth £1,200 went to engineer David McLean, for his work on improving the company's purchasing systems.
Commenting on the prizegiving, Jo said:
"I was grateful to be asked to present prizes to the employees who had contributed most to the company in the past 12 months - there were some ingenious examples of simple but effective ways to save money and increase productivity."
During the visit, Jo was given a tour of the factory site in Kirkintilloch by Plant Manager Tim Storey, and held talks with the company's local and international directors.

Following the visit, Jo commented:
"Being able to talk face to face with the company directors was hugely beneficial in understanding the challenges that the company is facing, which range from concern over energy costs to future long term plans.
"This is a good example of a strong, international manufacturing company with a large local workforce, that must be given every encouragement to make Kirkintilloch a major part of the group's operations.
Plant Manager Tim Storey commented:
"Guala Closures is a major supplier of packaging material to the drinks industry, with 21 plants in 12 countries on four continents.
"Scotch whisky is a worldwide export, hence Kirkintilloch serves as a strategically important manufacturing base for the company, because of the close location of whisky producers.
"My thanks go to Jo Swinson for taking the time to visit the plant, her contribution to the awards ceremony made the day all the more memorable for staff and all involved."
Guala Closures UK Ltd (Montgomery) is a market leading business, part of an international group, involved in making bottle tops for the Whisky and other white spirits industry. The plant employs 170 people.
In November 2005, parent company floated on the Italian stock exchange, putting Montgomery in line for further capital and job creation projects.
Staff awards are given out quarterly, with an annual awards ceremony bringing together the quarterly winners. Awards are given out for 'Continuous Improvement' suggestions that are of benefit to the plant. The awards focus on employees and drive improvement (and therefore competitivity) as well as employee involvement in the business.
