Statement from Jo Swinson following the resignation of Charles Kennedy

January 9, 2006 12:00 PM

Charles Kennedy and Jo Swinson in MilngavieCommenting on the decision of Charles Kennedy to stand down as Liberal Democrat party leader, Jo said:

"Charles Kennedy has showed great courage and dignity over the past few days, in what has been an upsetting time for everyone involved. I respect Charles for his bravery and the difficult decision he has made to step down as leader, and I pay tribute to his achievements. He led the Liberal Democrats to our best general election result for over 80 years, with 1 million more votes and 62 MPs.

This puts us in a strong position to draw from the talent that exists within the party and choose a leader who can further cement the Liberal Democrats as the most progressive force in UK politics. I hope that Charles Kennedy can now have time and privacy to focus on his health, and that he will in future return to front line politics - with his talent and experience he still has much to contribute."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
