Back to school for Jo Swinson

Jo Swinson MP has spoken out about the need to make politics accessible to young people, after meeting pupils at Bearsden Academy.
Bearsden Academy today hosted a visit from Jo, during which she was grilled by Standard Grade and Higher pupils about her work, both locally in Parliament. She also met with staff and was given a tour of the school by Advanced Higher pupils.
Commenting on the visit, Jo said:
"The 80 Standard Grade and Higher pupils that I held a question and answer session with had a lot of well-informed questions for me. They showed a keen interest in the work of MPs and we had a lively and engaging discussion on topics such as climate change, countering terrorism and making politics more representative.
"I am passionate about getting young people involved in politics, so seeing such enthusiasm from the pupils was very rewarding. It is vital that politics is made relevant and accessible to young people, so that their interest and energy is sustained as they come to participate in the political system."
Jo was given a tour of school facilities by Advanced Higher pupils, and paid tribute to the hospitality she received:
"The Advanced Higher pupils that showed me round the school facilities were also a bright, inquisitive group, who I am sure will go on to successful things in the future, be it in politics or another field. I thank pupils and staff for the warm welcome I received on the visit."
Modern Studies teacher Melanie Shepley, who helped to arrange the visit, commented:
"The visit was a great success, with pupils clearly getting a lot out of the question and answer session. The advanced higher pupils were proud to be given the responsibility of showing Jo round the school, and members of staff were also pleased to have been able to speak to Jo."
Jo plans to visit other schools around East Dunbartonshire in the near future.
