Jo has been given a behind-the-scenes look at the Christmas post sorting operation

Jo Swinson MP has paid tribute to staff at the Royal Mail's Bishopbriggs Delivery Office, during a visit to see the festive post operation in full swing.

Touring the delivery office this morning, Jo met the postmen and women who are working hard to sort and deliver Bishopbriggs' share of the estimated total Scottish Christmas postbag of 250 million items.

Commenting on the visit, Jo said:

"The huge scale of the Christmas post operation really is impressive when seen first-hand. Thirty-two members of staff will sort and deliver up to 250,000 items per week. I pay tribute to the efforts of staff working tirelessly to ensure that our cards and gifts are delivered on time.

"We have all rushed to get our last minute Christmas posting done, but having met the Royal Mail staff and seen challenge of sorting and delivering Bishopbriggs' Christmas post, I will be more punctual in my getting my posting done this year!"

Sam Winning, Delivery Manager, said:

"Christmas is our busiest time of year. Our people work hard throughout the year to ensure mail is delivered quickly but over the busy festive period they really pull out all the stops. We are pleased that Jo Swinson came along to Royal Mail to see first hand the hard work that goes on behind the scenes."

He added: "The postal staff do a fantastic job at this time of year to ensure that friends and families stay in touch through their Christmas greetings and gifts. And as usual, we urge our customers to post early so that friends and family have longer to enjoy their Christmas greetings!"

• Recommended UK last posting dates:

Tuesday December 20 - First Class

Saturday December 17 - Second Class

• Letters to Santa should be stamped and posted by Tuesday, December 13, addressed to Santa, Reindeerland, SAN TA1. Those letters that include a return address and are posted by December 13th, will receive a reply from Santa.
