Jo gives Skatepark plans lottery boost

Kirkintilloch Skatepark Initiative will benefit from a lottery award
Jo Swinson MP was given a first glimpse of plans for a new skatepark in Kirkintilloch yesterday, as she presented an Awards For All grant to Kirkintilloch Skatepark Initiative. Jo was shown the designs and given the chance to meet some of the young skaters behind the project.
Jo commented,
"It was a pleasure to meet the young people behind this ambitious project. They have been hard at work for over two years, raising money to realise their goal of building a skatepark.
"This grant will take them one step closer to turning their designs into reality.
"It is terrific that young people from East Dunbartonshire have been able to contribute to the designing of a facility that they will go on to use.
"The video produced by Kirkintilloch Skatepark Initiative about the project is impressive, and makes a really strong case for the skatepark. With the ongoing support from the Council, politicians from all sides and the community, this enthusiastic and energetic group is set for success!"
The grant of £3,273 was awarded to cover the cost of a detailed drainage study, required by site planners.
Working with KSI, East Dunbartonshire Council have earmarked an area of land in Luggie Park, Kirkintilloch, for the building of the skatepark. It is hoped that this green space can be turned into a vibrant community facility in the next few years. Plans are already in place to upgrade the parkland, paths and play area facilities.
Susan Murray, treasurer of Kirkintilloch Skatepark Initiative, commented,
"We were delighted that Jo came to present this award, as she has been such a positive supporter of KSI. We understand that we need the backing of political figures like Jo to make this project successful.
"The meeting was chaired by Alex Baylis (17), a founding member of the group, and we have been giving control of this project to the young people wherever possible. Everyone was happy with how the meeting went, and the enthusiasm of the young people involved has been recharged as a result."
Kirkintilloch Skatepark Initiative was established out of a public meeting of over 100 skaters in March 2003. A core committee of youngsters formed to provide direction to KSI, which currently has a membership of 25-30 young skaters. Membership is free to all skaters who want to get involved in fundraising and other activities.
KSI has spent the past two years fundraising, talking to other groups, designing the skatepark and taking steps to meet the planning guidelines.
