Jo Swinson calls for residents to engage in consultations
Jo Swinson MP has called on residents in East Dunbartonshire to make full use of opportunities for consultation over the planned future of Glasgow Airport.
In a meeting yesterday with Chief Executive Stephen Baxter and Airfield Operations Manager Anne Philips, Jo discussed the impact of the airport's draft 25-year Master Plan on East Dunbartonshire.
It was also announced yesterday that a series of community drop-in sessions will be held, in order to give local people more information about the airport's future plans.
While staying positive about the benefits that expansion will bring to the area, Jo also welcomed the announcement that residents affected, especially in Milngavie and Bearsden, would be given a platform to raise any concerns they may have.
"I was grateful for the chance to see the draft master plan for Glasgow Airport. This will have an impact on East Dunbartonshire, as many residents enjoy the benefit of having an airport so close by, with ever expanding routes and destinations."
"On the other hand, Bearsden and Milngavie are on the flight path and are affected by aircraft noise, particularly during the busy summer season. It is therefore important that local people take the opportunity to make their views heard through this consultation process, and I would urge people who are interested to have a look at the plan and pass their comments to Glasgow Airport."
The draft planning document details how the airport will develop between now and 2030 and the impact it will have on tourism, jobs, investment and the environment. An extra 28,000 jobs are expected to be created as the airport grows to handle as many as 24 million passengers a year by 2030.
Following the launch of the Master Plan, Glasgow Airport began an extensive consultation involving local residents, community councils, business leaders and politicians. Drop-in sessions will be held at Glasgow Airport and around the community, with senior members of the BAA Glasgow team on hand to answer any questions.
On the technological advances within the airport that could be used to directly benefit constituents, Jo Swinson made the following comment:
"While at the meeting, I was also shown the software which Glasgow Airport have been able to use for the past 2 years, to track every single flight take-off and landing, and see at a glance if there is any deviation from the usual flightpath or altitude at a specific location. This tool has enabled the Airport to respond to individual contacts from members of the public regarding specific incidences of increased noise due to particularly low-flying planes, for example, and take issues up with the flight operators."

• 26 October, Spence Room, BAA Scotland HQ, St Andrew's Drive, Paisley
All sessions will run from 6.30 - 8.00pm.
