An independent expert this month published research which suggests that the new Westminster seat of East Dunbartonshire will be a close contest between the Liberal Democrats and Labour. The study by Professor David Denver shows that under the new boundaries for the next General Election contest, the Lib Dems are currently in second place, just 2,601 votes behind Labour. A swing of just 3.1% would see the Lib Dems capture the seat.

The new East Dunbartonshire constituency covers Milngavie, Bearsden, Lenzie, Bishopbriggs and Torrance.

Local Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson Jo Swinson welcomed the notional result, "This confirms what we know from speaking to local people - round here it's between the Liberal Democrats and Labour. For too long Labour have taken the West of Scotland for granted. The new boundaries provide a great opportunity for local people to elect a hard-working Liberal Democrat MP who will fight for more investment in public services and protecting local Post Offices."

The full 2001 notional result for East Dunbartonshire is:

Labour 13,792 (33.3%)

Liberal Democrat 11,191 (27.1%)

Conservative 9,290 (22.5%)

SNP 6,099 (14.7%)

SSP 1,006 (2.4%)

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
