Elspeth Attwooll, Scottish Liberal Democrat MEP recently went on a canal boat trip in Kirkintilloch with Jo Swinson, Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson for East Dunbartonshire to see how the recent European grant of 407,585 euros (£277,028) for the Forth and Clyde canal will be spent.

The grant is part of an EU strategy to promote North Sea traffic between EU members and this is an approach the Scottish Liberal Democrats are keen to promote.

Ms Attwooll said: "We believe that EU proposals for 'motorways of the sea' should help Scotland to improve freight and passenger maritime links across the North and Irish seas and into the Baltic Sea, so this funding should help the Forth and Clyde canal be a part of this exciting new development. Canals are an underused resource, but I believe they have an important role to play in developing new, sustainable transport policies. And of course, there is huge potential for job creation too"

She added: "In the European Parliament, I have successfully argued for more flexibility in EU funding for interregional cooperation between maritime regions. Now we will be able to reap the benefits of this."

Jo Swinson commented: "I was delighted to welcome Elspeth Attwooll MEP to Kirkintilloch to see the improvements to the canal. The Forth & Clyde Canal is a real asset for the community, with economic benefits as well as providing a pleasant amenity. The more people are aware of it and use it the better."

If you are a resident of the East Dunbartonshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
